National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) is inviting applications for the positions of NAOJ fellow, in order to encourage highly qualified young researchers to participate in research activities at NAOJ.

The applicant must have a PhD degree in astronomy or related fields by the starting date. The term starts at 1 April 2020 or later, but no later than 30 September 2020. The term is for five years, subject to annual review. In case that the successful candidate was an NINS employee after 2013 April 1, the term may be set so that the total accumulated terms of the employment does not exceed ten years.

The fellow will receive a monthly salary of 550,000 JPY (please confirm more detail on the observatory web : http://www.nao.ac.jp/en/job-vacancy.html) plus compensation for commuting expenses up to JPY55,000 per month, and annual research funds of 1,000,000 JPY. Social insurance will be applied. Bonus and retirement allowances are not provided. The travel and relocation costs to NAOJ will be covered, subject to the travel regulations of NINS (the details have to be arranged with the administration office).

In case of working overseas

In the case of relocating to work at Subaru Telescope (Hilo, Hawaiʻi) from outside Hawaiʻi, U.S.A. or at NAOJ Chile Observatory (Santiago) from outside Chile, you will be paid an allowance in addition to the annual salary written above.
If you work at Subaru Telescope (Hilo, Hawaiʻi), you will be employed through the Research Corporation of the University of Hawaii (RCUH). Salaries and allowances will be paid in US dollars.
