Job Description

The Utah Valley University Physics Department (www.uvu.edu/physics) invites applications for a tenure-track position in astronomy beginning in August 2023. Preference will be given to candidates who are prepared to teach a variety of undergraduate classes (astronomy professors typically teach several sections of introductory-level astronomy and one or two upper-division courses a year) and to involve students in mentored research projects. The teaching load at UVU is 12 credit hours per semester. Modest amounts of internal funding are available to support mentoring students in research projects.

UVU is a large, dynamic, and evolving teaching-oriented public university located in the Orem-Provo area at the base of the beautiful Wasatch mountains in Utah. Physics faculty at UVU are committed to excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level. The Physics Department currently has 16 full-time faculty including four astronomers specializing in observational cosmology, the extragalactic distance scale, brown dwarfs and exoplanets, and astronomy education and outreach. UVU has a modern Digistar planetarium classroom and is collaborating to construct a regional public observatory for public outreach and education. UVU also maintains a field station in the Capitol Reef National Park, one of several International Dark Sky parks in the state.

Candidates with relevant teaching experience and expertise in any field of astronomy or astrophysics will be considered. A PhD is required, and post-doctoral research and/or undergraduate teaching experience are preferred. UVU demonstrates a heartfelt commitment to inclusivity and diversity among its students and employees. We welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds who are eager to help construct and maintain a culture of inclusion in physics, and who act with a resolute commitment to eliminate barriers to college access, success, and completion. UVU is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer, with a strong commitment to diversity. Women, minorities, and individuals with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply.
