About the opportunity:

The Astronomy Group in the School of Physics at UNSW invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow to work with Kim-Vy Tran on the ASTRO 3D Galaxy Evolution with Lenses (AGEL) survey.  The Postdoctoral Fellow is expected to lead AGEL science based on observations taken with Keck Observatory, the Very Large Telescope, and the Hubble Space Telescope.  Experience with modeling gravitational lenses and/or multi-wavelength observations including spectroscopy is particularly appreciated.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will join the ASTRO 3D Centre of Excellence (https://astro3d.org.au) and its network of 250+ researchers spanning 9 Australian nodes and multiple international partners.  UNSW is located in the beautiful city of Sydney, and the Kensington campus is located in the Eastern Suburbs just 6 km from the heart of the city, 2 km from Coogee Beach, and 8 km from Sydney’s domestic and international airports.

The initial appointment is for 2 years with possible extension of 2 years based on funding and performance.  Assistance towards relocation expenses and visa sponsorship will be available for the successful applicant if required.

About the successful applicant:

  • A PhD in Astronomy and Astrophysics or related discipline prior to starting the position.
  • Experience with optical/near-infrared spectroscopy and/or modelling of gravitational lenses is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct research and publish in leading international scientific journals.
  • A research track record (relative to opportunity) in galaxy evolution using multi-wavelength observations as evidenced by conference presentations and publications.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a research team and to contribute to the broader intellectual environment of the Astronomy Group and the School of Physics.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
