Job Description

The Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of California (UC), Santa Cruz invites applications for a position at the Assistant Professor tenure-track level. Outstanding candidates in all subfields of astrophysics will be considered. We are especially seeking applications from candidates with research interests in theoretical and computational astrophysics as well as in astronomical data science.

UC Santa Cruz is one of the world's leading centers for research in computational astrophysics, which includes the cross-departmental research unit Theoretical Astrophysics Santa Cruz. The campus is also the home of the University of California Observatories, which has instrumentation development laboratories, the Laboratory for Adaptive Optics, observing facilities including the Lick and Keck Observatories, and the Santa Cruz Institute for Particle Physics, all of which are relevant to the advertised position.

The current faculty has strengths in optical and near-IR observations, theory, numerical simulations, and instrumentation, with special concentrations in cosmology and galaxy formation, galactic structure, high-energy astrophysics, star and planet formation, and particle astrophysics. We seek candidates whose research will integrate with the programs mentioned above and broaden the scope of our faculty.

The successful candidate is expected to maintain a first-class research program, teach in the department's undergraduate and graduate programs, supervise graduate and undergraduate student research, and contribute broadly to the intellectual vitality of the institution. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of research excellence and basic teaching experience, and will have completed at least one year as a postdoctoral scholar or one year of research lab experience at the time of application. For additional information on the department, please see http://www.astro.ucsc.edu.

UC Santa Cruz is a Hispanic-Serving Institution with a high proportion of first-in-family undergraduate students. We seek candidates whose personal experience and educational background have shaped their appreciation of barriers facing underrepresented groups in academic careers, including women and ethnic minorities, and who have demonstrated a commitment to improving equity and diversity in the scholarly environment through teaching, mentoring, research, life experiences, or other service.
