The Department of Physics at the University of Helsinki is inviting applications for an ERC-funded postdoctoral position in computational and theoretical astrophysics. The positions are offered within the ERC-Consolidator Grant Project KETJU.
Successful applicants will join the Theoretical Extragalactic Research Group led by Professor Peter Johansson and are expected to work on the themes relevant to KETJU, including: cosmological simulations of early-type galaxy formation, modelling the accurate dynamics of supermassive black holes, the implementation of small-scale gas physics and black hole feedback, the calculation of the gravitational wave signal from binary supermassive black holes and/or the modelling of the formation and evolution of stellar clusters.
The project includes international collaboration and provides ample funding for travel. The successful applicant will have access to the Finnish national supercomputing centre, enjoy a stimulating work environment, and is encouraged to develop a unique research profile within the framework set by the research project.
Applicants should have a PhD in astrophysics or a closely related field, and ideally also experience with numerical simulations and/or gravitational wave astrophysics. In addition, good programming and data analysis skills and a demonstrated ability for independent work are considered highly advantageous. The appointment will be for an initial period of two years with a possible extension for future years depending on performance and available funding. The earliest starting date is February 2024, but later dates are also possible. The annual gross salary will be within the range of 50 000-55 000 €/yr depending on experience and qualifications.
