Job Announcement Text:

Founded by the Congregation of Holy Cross in 1948, Stonehill is a private Catholic college located just 22 miles from downtown Boston on a beautiful 384-acre campus in Easton, Massachusetts. With a student to faculty ratio of 13:1, the College engages its 2,400+ students in 80+ rigorous academic programs in the liberal arts, sciences, and pre-professional fields.

Faithful to the Holy Cross tradition in education, Stonehill College is committed to developing the moral, spiritual, intellectual, physical, and social competencies of its students and seeks to build and sustain a campus community that embraces diversity and inclusion in its teaching, learning, living, and working. Stonehill values a diversity of persons, opinions, and cultural and religious perspectives. In fulfillment of its motto, Lux et Spes (“Light and Hope”), the College cultivates in its students the competence to think, act, and lead with courage towards creating a more just and compassionate world.

The Department of Physics & Astronomy at Stonehill College invites applicants for a tenure track assistant professor position, starting in the Fall of 2020.

We are interested in applicants with background in astrophysics, astronomy, cosmology, geophysics or, more generally, geosciences. We might also consider a particle physicist or a plasma physicist with ongoing long-term involvement in outside projects which may be potentially open to our students. Our strong preference is for applicants with an experimental and/or observational background, plus a good knowledge of computational methods and, ideally, computer simulations of physical systems.

The applicant will join a department of three full-time tenured and tenure track faculty. We have a wide range of disciplinary expertise, ranging from astrophysics, to geophysics, quantum field theory, theoretical and experimental optics and engineering photonics. We are a department of individualists, who value independence and self-reliance, but also informal social interaction, teamwork and friendship. Each one of us has contributed to the growth of the department, by introducing new programs, new courses and new ways of teaching. We are looking for an energetic person who can bring their contribution to the further academic growth of our department, a person of ideas who is able to work with others for common goals.

The applicant should have a very strong interest in teaching, a record of published research and a clear ongoing program of research. Typically, the teaching load in our department is 9-11 teaching credits per semester; lecture-only courses count for 3 credits and courses which include a lab component count for 5 credits. The applicant will also be committed to involving students in some of their research, and helping them apply to good internships, including our own S.U.R.E. Program. We have an astronomical observatory, and the basic infrastructure needed to build a solar observatory. The applicant will contribute to the use and further development of these facilities.

Please apply electronically, including a cover letter, a teaching and a research statement, a resume and three references on our jobsite:

If you have any questions, or concerns, please contact Dr. Alessandro Massarotti, Chair at amassarotti@stonehill.edu

Applicants who will enrich the diversity of the campus community are strongly encouraged to apply.
