Job Description

The Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Position in Theoretical Astrophysics and/or Physical Cosmology. The position is an independent research position in the Cosmology and High-Energy Astrophysics section. The post-doctoral fellow will be expected to pursue her/his own research priorities that are complimentary and synergetic to those of the cosmology section. Research in this section is largely based on developing algorithms for numerically modelling astrophysical processes and performing large computer simulations. Such numerical experiments focus on understanding the physics of galaxy formation in a broad sense from plasma kinetics to cosmological scales, including the interstellar, circum- and intergalactic media, galaxies, galaxy clusters and the large-scale structure of the Universe around us.

The position will start in fall 2020 and includes travel, computing support and has access to HPC supercomputers. The applicant is expected to have or shortly receive a PhD in Physics or Astronomy. The initial appointment will be made for 2 years, with a possible extension of up to a maximum of 5 years, depending on performance and availability of funds. The salary is based on the German public service scale (TV-L). The AIP is an equal opportunity employer, values diversity and particularly encourages applications from women and minorities.

The AIP is located in the beautiful Potsdam/Babelsberg area, at the South-Western border of the Berlin metropolitan area. About 130 scientists work on a variety of astrophysical topics covering the full range from solar physics to cosmology, features excellent computer facilities and has access to supercomputers. Potsdam is also the home of the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics, the Institute for Physics & Astronomy of Potsdam University and several other research institutions.

To apply, please send a PDF file containing a research statement (up to 3 pages), a curriculum vitae and publication list, to Christoph Pfrommer via [email protected] by November 30th, 2019. Applicants should arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent to the same address by the same date.
