The X-ray Astronomy and Observational Cosmology (XOC) group at Stanford University has an opening for a postdoctoral researcher working in the field of X-ray astronomy. The position is for three years and offers competitive salary and benefits.
The XOC group at Stanford is engaged in many areas of X-ray astronomy, including studies of Galactic and supermassive black holes, feedback processes in galaxies and galaxy clusters, the physics of the circumgalactic medium and intracluster medium, and cosmological measurements using X-ray probes. The group also has an active program of hardware development for future X-ray missions, including the Athena satellite and NASA mission concepts, and is engaged in the development of novel data analysis approaches. The new researcher will be able to join ongoing collaborative projects within the group and develop their own original research program.
The XOC group is part of the Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology (KIPAC) at Stanford University and SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. KIPAC hosts a vibrant research community, active across many branches of astrophysics and cosmology. The institute offers access to significant computational resources for theoretical research and data analysis, and excellent laboratory facilities for instrument development. KIPAC places a substantial emphasis on community and the mentoring of junior scientists.
Application materials should be submitted at https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/25538. Candidates for these positions should have, or expect to receive, a Ph.D. in astronomy or physics prior to starting their appointment. They should provide a curriculum vitae, including a publication list and a 3-page statement of research interests and plans, and arrange to have at least three letters of recommendation submitted. We also encourage applicants, as a component of their research statement, to discuss their experience with or commitment to engaging in mentoring, outreach, teaching, fostering inclusive environments, or activities that diversify the field. Applicants will also be considered for other available postdoctoral positions at KIPAC, including the Kavli and Porat Fellowships.
The deadline for applications is Friday, November 3, 2023 (by midnight Eastern Pacific Time). Late applications will be considered at the discretion of the search committee. More information about the XOC group and KIPAC can be found at https://xoc.stanford.edu and https://kipac.stanford.edu, respectively. KIPAC is committed to providing an inclusive work environment. We encourage applications from candidates that will diversify the workforce in X-ray astronomy. Informal enquiries about the position can be directed to Prof. Steve Allen ([email protected]).
