Responsibilities

Provide technical scientific and engineering support and contribute to the research within a laboratory environment. 

 

Key Functions

  • Apply technical oversight and quality assurance to the development, maintenance, radiometric calibration, and operation of national asset spacecraft imaging and spectroscopic sensors.
  • Develop, operate, and calibrate remote sensing and astronomical instrumentation.
  • Conduct independent research and author successful research proposals.
  • Participate in remote sensing data collects supporting scientific investigations in subject areas including sensor calibration, astronomy, remote sensing, space object identification, and space situational awareness.
  • Reduce, analyze, and present results of these collects and other analyses as spoken briefs and written technical reports and journal publications.

 

Qualifications

 

Required

  • PhD in astronomy or astrophysics
  • Two or more years of increasingly responsible and related engineering/scientific experience.
  • Background in remote sensing, observational astronomy, infrared sensors, radiometry, and the design, fabrication, calibration, and operation of remote sensing and astronomical instrumentation.
  • Ability to reduce and analyze imaging, spectroscopic, and hyperspectral data.
  • Travel up to 25% of the time.
  • Ability to work at high altitude.
  • Ability to access rooftop observatory via staircase.
  • Proven ability to carry out research and assigned tasks independently.
  • Good communication skills demonstrated through a colloquium or technical presentation; good technical writing skills demonstrated through a publication record.
  • The ability to interact successfully in multi-disciplinary technical environment that includes scientists, engineers, and military personnel.
  • The ability to obtain DoD secret and a SCI clearance.

 

Preferred

  • Postgraduate experience.
  • Proficiency in IDL, MatLab, Python.
  • Extensive experience in observational astronomy.
  • Extensive experience in instrumentation development.
