Job Description

About us

The Curtin Institute of Radio Astronomy (CIRA) is a multi-disciplinary research institute engaged in a range of projects involving or motivated by radio astronomy. CIRA’s activities draw together academic research and professional staff from a variety of science, engineering, and computing disciplines to tackle unique and demanding challenges in radio astronomy. CIRA is the lead organisation and operator of the Murchison Widefield Array, and a key participant in the international Square Kilometre Array project.

Your new role

As an Associate Lecturer at CIRA, you will play a key role in our fast radio burst (FRB) program and contribute to teaching activities.

CIRA is a leading institute in the Commensal Real-time ASKAP Fast Transients Survey (CRAFT) with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) radio telescope. A new detection system is currently being commissioned on ASKAP, which will increase the rate of FRB discoveries ten-fold. You will play a key role in commissioning this system and interpreting the resulting localised FRB data in the context of FRB emission mechanisms, progenitors, host galaxies, and/or cosmological studies.

As part of the CRAFT Collaboration, you will work with local undergraduate and postgraduate students, researchers throughout Australia, and international colleagues. There is an expectation to contribute to CIRA’s teaching responsibilities in the field of astronomy, physics, mathematics and/or statistics.

Essential Criteria:

  • Doctoral qualification in a relevant discipline (e.g., astrophysics, radio astronomy).
  • Ability to contribute to the scientific goals of fast radio burst science in the context of the CRAFT collaboration.
  • Demonstrated ability in oral and written scientific communication.
  • Hold or be able to obtain the right to work in Australia.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Computational experience in supercomputing, analysis pipelines, and programming.
  • Ability to work as a member of a distributed scientific research team.
  • Experience in high-time-resolution radio astronomy.
  • Experience in radio or optical extragalactic astronomy.
  • Experience in supervising or working with post- and under-graduate students.
  • Demonstrated initiative in improving the workplace environment in terms of equity, diversity, sustainability, or other relevant axis.
