Software Developer
Job Summary
Job Description
Are you a software developer interested in astronomy? Want to work on game-changing technology at the expanding wavefront of astronomical observation? The Las Cumbres Observatory (LCO) global network of robotic telescopes is enabling astronomers to observe 24/7. Our revolutionary software stack can avoid bad weather, reroute around problems, and balance real-time requests from astronomers and students. Our users study exoplanets, supernovae, near-earth asteroids and much more.
What you’ll be doing
As part of our distributed agile team, you’ll be using your 2+ years of Python and cloud computing experience to architect and implement a full-stack system to facilitate large astronomical projects.
More about us
LCO is globally distributed with its base of operations in Santa Barbara, California. We have deployed the world's largest network of geographically distributed optical telescopes for general scientific and educational use. We’re motivated by the desire to expand human knowledge, and to instill a passion for science in young people. Our organization has a fun-loving, dedicated staff, working in a casual but focused environment. Here you will find people who are passionate both about what they do and about our overall mission.
Our team
Our software stack spans everything from web-based user interfaces to discrete optimization algorithms for scheduling the network, and from distributed fault-tolerant infrastructure to expert systems controlling the telescopes and instruments collecting the photons. Working at LCO provides an opportunity to gain experience in a broad range of projects and technologies.
This opportunity is open to anyone resident and permitted to work in the United States with no requirement to relocate to Santa Barbara. We are welcoming applicants at junior and senior experience levels.
LCO offers interesting work, professional development opportunities and generous benefits.
LCO is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We are actively engaged in building and nurturing a culture that is welcoming and inclusive of people from diverse backgrounds with regard to race, color, sex, age, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity and/or expression, disability and veteran status.
