Job Description

The Department of Physics at the University of Warwick seeks to appoint at least two academic posts in the area of extragalactic transient astrophysics, at both senior level (Professor) and junior level (Assistant Professor). Expansion in this area is a strategic priority. Applicants will have a strong research track record and be ready to build their own research team with the support of colleagues at Warwick.

Warwick has a strong track record in time-domain astrophysics and explosive transients which we wish to build upon in the era of multi-messenger astronomy. Warwick leads the international Gravitational wave Optical Transient Observer (GOTO) project, which consists of an array of wide-field telescopes aimed at fast transients and GW follow-up from both hemispheres. It has been awarded substantial funding to expand over the next few years. Members of staff are also active in transient follow-up programs, such as the ENGRAVE consortium for the follow-up of gravitational wave events with the facilities of the European Southern Observatory, and are interested in the host environments and progenitor populations. It is expected that the successful candidates will take advantage of the opportunities presented by these experiments and others on the multi-messenger roadmap.

You will have excellent communication skills and contribute to the teaching and administration of the Department. For the senior post, a proven leadership in research, funding and early career researcher supervision is expected, as well as a clear future vision.

In addition to the above posts, we invite applications from outstanding scientists who either already hold an externally funded Research Fellowship or are seeking a top-class institution with which to apply for such a Fellowship within this research area.

The University of Warwick maintains a global outlook and has affiliates around the globe. The Department of Physics will provide an exciting and highly supportive environment in which academics can develop their careers.

We are fully committed to equality of opportunity and encourage application and enquiries from all suitably qualified candidates. Posts may be held full or part-time.

Candidates must submit their application via the online application system, using the links provided.
