Job Description

2019 KIAA Postdoctoral Fellowships The Kavli Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics (KIAA) at Peking University (PKU), Beijing, China invites applications for (1) KIAA Postdoctoral Fellowships, (2) KIAA-Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Postdoctoral Fellowships, and (3) KIAA-International Centre of Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) Postdoctoral Fellowships. For more information on these fellowships and all other postdoctoral opportunities at KIAA, see: http://kiaa.pku.edu.cn/opportunities/postdoc

The KIAA Fellowships and other positions are open to qualified applicants in any area. The KIAA-CAS Fellowships gives preference to applicants whose research is closely related to observational facilities hosted by CAS, including (1) galaxy and AGN research using optical spectroscopy, (2) physics of AGN jets using radio techniques, (3) gas and dust content of galaxies and AGNs, with special emphasis on H I (21 cm) observations, (4) pulsars, and (5) gravitational waves. The KIAA-ICRAR fellowship gives preference to applicants related to 1) galaxy assembly and evolution (neutral atomic and molecular gas, radio continuum), 2) galaxy-AGN-black hole coevolution (neutral atomic and molecular gas, radio continuum), 3) the variable universe (radio transients), and 4) cosmology (large-scale structure, intensity mapping).

The KIAA and KIAA-CAS fellowships are for a period of two years, renewable for a third year subject to a performance evaluation and the availability of funding. For the CAS Fellowship, the third year should occur at one of the CAS observatories. The KIAA-ICRAR fellowships are four-year appointments, with the half based at KIAA and half at ICRAR.

Successful applicants will be encouraged to carry out independent and original research as well as collaborate with staff at Peking University and partner institutes. The successful applicant should begin at KIAA within 3 years of their PhD diploma, with exceptions possible in rare cases. The KIAA and KIAA-CAS fellowships are open to applicants of any nationality; the KIAA-ICRAR Fellowships are restricted to Chinese citizens.

Astrophysics at Peking University includes a total of 25 faculty, 30 postdoctoral fellows, 60 graduate students, 120 undergraduates, and many visiting scholars. KIAA is located on the historic grounds of PKU, has English as the working language, and regularly sponsors thematic workshops and conferences to provide a platform for national and international scientific exchanges. We have priority access to a wide range of domestic and international telescopes and to domestic supercomputing facilities.

CAS is the largest national science institution in China and includes several national observatories and institutes in astronomy and astrophysics, located in Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Kunming and other cities. CAS operates most of the major astronomical facilities in China, including LAMOST, 500m FAST and 65m Tianma radio telescopes, and is planning future facilities such as an optical/IR 12m telescope, several space telescopes, and international facilities such as TMT and SKA. For more information, see http://english.nao.cas.cn

ICRAR is a joint venture between Curtin University and the University of Western Australia, engaged in Astronomy research, engineering and data intensive astronomy. ICRAR is ranked as one of the top five institutions of its kind in the world and is a significant partner in SKA pre-construction activities. For more information, see http://www.icrar.org

Applicants should indicate which of the three fellowships they are most interested in. Prospective applicants are encouraged to discuss possible collaborative projects with faculty members at either KIAA or the PKU Department of Astronomy.

RANK: Postdoctoral fellow.
