Job Description

SCEXAO POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOW – ID# 19573.

 

National Astronomical Observatory of Japan. Regular, Full-Time, Limited Term (up to two (2) years in duration, renewable up to one (1) year), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), Subaru Telescope, located in Hilo, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

 

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $3,260/Mon.

 

DUTIES: Participates in the technical development of the Subaru Coronagraphic Extreme Adaptive Optics (SCExAO) system and related technologies. Drives to Maunakea summit to provide support in technology development and validation for high contrast imaging, including advanced wavefront control algorithms, starlight suppression, and data analysis. Pursues independent astronomical research, publishes papers, and presents results at conferences.

 

REQUIRES: PhD from an accredited college or university in Astronomy or closely related field. (PhD candidates may apply but must submit evidence of PhD completion upon hire). One to three (1-3) years of experience in high angular resolution astronomical instrumentation and research in astronomy. Knowledge in astronomy, astronomical instrumentation, and computer programming. Ability to undertake independent program of astronomical research. Good written and oral communications skills. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to work at 14,000 feet and pass a post offer high-altitude medical examination.
