Job Description

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral appointment in the low-frequency radio group at Leiden Observatory, Leiden University.

Leiden Observatory is the oldest university astronomy department in the world, and the largest astronomy department in the Netherlands. Leiden is a charming university town with international flair.

The successful applicant will be expected to actively engage in extragalactic radio studies carried out with LOFAR and other radio telescopes, and/or multi-wavelength follow-up (e.g., optical, X-rays). The applicant will contribute to the scientific exploitation of the data obtained from the ongoing LOFAR surveys and will join the broader international LOFAR Surveys Key Science Project which is lead from Leiden Observatory. Experience with low-frequency interferometric observations, calibration and imaging algorithms, and python coding are a pre. However, we will also consider highly qualified applicants with a general (optical/IR) background in extragalactic science and/or galaxy clusters.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in astronomy or physics. The three year position is available as of 1 March, 2020, but the start date is flexible. Applications should be submitted electronically at https://jobs.strw.leidenuniv.nl/2019/WeerenPD. A complete application includes a cover letter, CV, publication list, and a two-page statement of research experience and interests. In addition, applicants should arrange for three reference letters be sent to the same address before the indicated deadline. Questions may be directed to Dr. R.
