About the opportunity

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Astrophotonics (Level A) to join our research team working in Astrophotonics, at the School of Physics, at the University of Sydney. The successful candidate will take a leading role in a research project devoted to developing advanced photonic technologies that will drive new generation instrumentation for astrophysical discovery. The exquisite control in the manipulation of light afforded by photonic technologies allows completely novel architectures to be brought to the service of astronomical measurement. This position requires interdisciplinary skills spanning astrophysics, instrumentation, computer control and numerical algorithms implemented in custom software in order to interpret the resulting data. Research will be conducted in the world class Sydney Astronomical Instrumentation Laboratories (SAIL), with expected final deployment of working instrumentation with project partners at the Subaru Telescope in Hawaii.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

• work on instrumentation for the GLINT instrument and its associated family of related projects in high resolution imaging and high contrast object detection

• join the instrumentation and technology program to develop integrated photonic interferometers and associated data analysis techniques to a level suitable for on-sky prototyping

• conduct observational campaigns, reduce and analyzing data, interpretation within the setting of contemporary astrophysical literature for publication

• pursue astrophysical research making use of instruments prototypes and the facilities we have access to within the project and collaborators and submit the results for publication in peer-reviewed journals

• co-supervise student research projects on related areas of science and technology.

About you

The University values courage and creativity; openness and engagement; inclusion and diversity; and respect and integrity. As such, we see the importance of recruiting talent aligned to these values and are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Astrophotonics who has:

• a PhD (or near completion) in Physics or Astronomy with possible consideration of Electronic/Information Technologies or a related discipline

• ability to conduct leading-edge research and with excellent written and verbal communication skills

• demonstrated ability to work well in a multidisciplinary team

• demonstrated ability in scientific and numerical programming, including data analysis skills, instrumentation software development or statistical methods applied to the interpretation of data

• experience in optical astronomical instrumentation

• published research as sole/first author or in collaboration.
