The Weizmann Observatory for Astrophysics and Planetary Science (WOAPS) is searching for a Scientific Director to join its ranks.

WOAPS is dedicated to the observational goals of the astrophysics and planetary science groups at the Weizmann Institute and facilitates the activities of these groups, that involve  telescopic observations. 

The Scientific Director will be responsible for the following activities.

  • Operating the various Weizmann observatories.
  • Developing its capabilities into the future, including instrument robotization, software control, and automated data analysis.
  • Coordinate development of new instrumentation and infrastructure.
  • Oversee maintenance of existing resources.
  • Communicate WOAPS mission to scientific and general audiences.
  • Devoting a fraction of their effort to their own individual research program.

The successful candidate shall have the following qualifications:

  • A PhD degree in a relevant discipline
  • A minimum of 5 years recent observing experience using large observatories internationally (e.g., Keck, ESO, Palomar) as well as in Israel (Wise).
  • Have experience with a variety of observing techniques (imaging, photometry, spectroscopy), in a variety of astronomical disciplines (e.g. solar system, high energy astrophysics).
  • Have experience in utilizing leading astronomical software packages
  • Have experience in developing software for astronomical data analysis.
  • Be able to demonstrate effective collaborations with international teams.
  • Be able to perform an observational campaign in all its stages, from conception to data reduction, analysis, and publication.
  • Be able to effectively communicate the mission of WOAPS to the general public.
  • Be able to effectively instruct others in the usage of relevant telescopes.
  • Be able to communicate fluently in English.

The WOAPS scientific director will be hired by the Weizmann Institute at a position appropriate to their scientific background and experience according to the institute’s regulations.
