Job Description

Assistant Professor in Cosmology
Department of Physics, Duke University

The Department of Physics at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina invites applications and nominations for a tenure-track position at the assistant professor level in the area of observational cosmology.

The successful candidate should demonstrate a strong previous research record and be ready to lead an independent research effort using cosmology to study fundamental physics. They should also be committed to teaching and supervising research at both the undergraduate and graduate level. The department is particularly interested in candidates with a background and research program in survey astronomy who can build on and strengthen the department's existing efforts on the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) and in the LSST Dark Energy Science Collaboration (DESC). In addition to LSST, the Duke physics department has strong synergistic efforts in particle and nuclear astrophysics and neutrino physics. Duke University values interdisciplinary collaboration across the university, and opportunities also exist to collaborate with colleagues from such departments as statistics and mathematics, along with the Statistical and Applied Mathematical Sciences Institute (SAMSI), and the Big Data Information Initiative at Duke.

Possible additional positions partly associated with those departments may be available if there are candidates with particularly strong interests and backgrounds in subjects such as contemporary Bayesian statistical modeling, or the mathematics of cosmological probes such as strong lensing.

The appointment is expected to begin on or after July 2018. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in physics, astronomy, or a closely related field, along with postdoctoral experience, and show a strong commitment to research and teaching. Interested candidates should submit a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, statements of research and teaching, and arrange to have at least three letters of recommendation submitted through Academic Jobs Online at https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/9958. Questions regarding the application process and the position should be submitted to [email protected].

Applications received by December 1, 2017 will be guaranteed consideration. Duke University is an Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer committed to providing employment opportunity without regard to an individual's age, color, disability, genetic information, gender, gender identity, national origin, race, religion, sexual orientation, or veteran status.
