The Georgia State University Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy operates the CHARA Array, one of the most powerful optical interferometers in the world, at Mount Wilson Observatory in California. CHARA is seeking to hire a Telescope Operations Specialist who will work at night (sometimes on weekends), often alone, at a remote mountain top location. This position is currently funded for five years and will include the following duties:
- Night-time operations of the CHARA Array and its associated beam combiners for acquiring scientific data.
- Day-time alignment of optical systems.
- Day-time maintenance of cryogenic detector systems (liquid nitrogen cooled).
- Updating observing logs.
- Miscellaneous beam combining laboratory activities.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree and three years of research experience; or high school diploma and seven years of research experience; or a combination of education and related experience.
Preferred Hiring Qualifications:
- Degree in physics, astronomy, engineering or equivalent.
- Experience in the use of optical systems.
- Experience in computer programming.
- Experience in instrument fabrication.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Experience in real-time problem solving.
