Senior Analyst - Her Majesty’s Nautical Almanac Office

Location: Taunton, Somerset
Salary: £33,287 per annum
Hours: Full time / Part time / Flexible
Contract: Fixed term

We are seeking a Senior Analyst to support the delivery of Her Majesty's Nautical Office (HMNAO) product portfolio, spanning astronomical and celestial navigation and astronomical data.

About UKHO

UKHO is an executive agency, sponsored by the Ministry of Defence. We work with a wide range of data partners to chart the world's oceans in order to develop and serve world leading software and data solutions to commercial shipping companies, navies and maritime organisations.

HMNAO is part of UKHO and exists “to provide solutions to astronomical and celestial navigation problems and to provide astronomical data to a wide variety of customers”.

HMNAO is embarking on a journey to update, modernise and re-position its existing products and services and to exploit opportunities to broaden their portfolio with new, innovative services. 

To make this journey HMNAO is seeking additional expertise and experience to deliver some immediate outcomes that will create the conditions for further developments.

The role 

This is an opportunity to make a significant contribution to the future capability of HMNAO and will offer successful candidates experiences in a stimulating subject area that will be widely transferable.

The purpose of this post is to support the delivery of the HMNAO product portfolio schedule. You will be responsible for:

  • Analysing astronomical data and producing almanacs and other publications/web content/software in support of customers of HMNAO products and services
  • Supporting Technical Leads, in software development and documentation for HMNAO products and services (e.g. Publication software, NavPac)

What we are looking for

We are looking for candidates who have the tenacity to analyse large volumes of numerical data and the ability to work with a high level of attention to detail to ensure a consistent and accurate output. You will have a degree/postgraduate qualification level, or equivalent experience, in mathematics (e.g. numerical analysis, vector/matrix manipulation) or a physics or computer science related discipline with experience of scientific programming.
