Job Announcement Text:

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research position in High-Contrast Imaging instrumentation/Data Science at the Laboratoire d’Astrophysique de Marseille (France). The position is nominally for 2 years with possibility of 1 year extension. The position can start as early as October 16, 2023, and preferentially before March 15, 2024.

Full job announce: https://euraxess.ec.europa.eu/jobs/130670

Description
The postdoc will work on the lab development, test, and optimization of observing strategies and post-processing techniques adapted to state-of-the-art high-contrast imaging instruments in space, making use of the deformable mirrors and wavefront sensor telemetry to improve the final exoplanet detection limits. These developments will be made primarily in the context of a possible on-sky demonstration with the Roman Space Telescope CGI instrument. Adaptations to the Habitable World Observatory may be explored as a secondary goal.
The postdoc will use data obtained with the HiCAT testbed located at STScI in Baltimore, a remotely operable 10-8-contrast testbed designed to develop system-level strategies for future space high-contrast imagers.

Environment
This research will be done at the Laboratoire d'Astrophysique de Marseille in the R&D Group, as part of the ESCAPE ERC project (2022-2027, PI: E. Choquet). The researcher will evolve in the ESCAPE team, which works on a diversity of topics related to space coronagraphic imaging. The postdoc will be invited to contribute to and benefit from the mutual interactions with the whole team.
The postdoc will also work in close collaboration with the HiCAT team in Baltimore, to coordinate experimental runs to gather the data needed for this work. The postdoc will have the opportunity to propose their results to the RST CGI Community Participation Program (CPP) through the French representation.

Qualifications
Our team recognize the key role of diversity in our scientific community. All qualified applicants will be considered regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, cultural background, or disability status.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Astronomy, Astrophysics, Physics, or equivalent. Experience in the following field will be given extra consideration:
- high-contrast imaging techniques
- Wavefront Sensign and Control
- Coronagraph developments
- Excellent programming skills (Pyhton, Git)

Procedure
Applications should be sent by email and include a CV, a publication list, and a statement of research experience and interests (2 pages). Applicants should arrange for at least 2 letters of recommendation to be sent by the same deadline.
Applications received after the deadline will be considered until the position is filled.

Included Benefits:

Benefits include full access to French social security (medical, dental, and vision insurance), 40 days of paid vacations, and unemployment benefits.
