Job Announcement Text:

We are looking to appoint a new Head of the Astrophysics Research Institute (ARI), one of the world's leading authorities in astronomy and astrophysics, which sits in the Faculty of Engineering and Technology (FET). The ARI offers joint degree programmes in BSc (Hons) Physics with Astronomy and in MPhys Astrophysics with the University of Liverpool Department of Physics. We are student focussed with a strong and dynamic research culture. The ARI carries out world-leading astronomical research using data gathered from premier observing facilities across the globe, coupled with predictions from supercomputer simulations. The Institute's key areas of interest are: star formation and stellar populations, galaxy formation and evolution, cosmology, time-domain astrophysics and astronomical instrumentation.

We have excellent partnerships locally, regionally, nationally and internationally, and are proud of the deep engagement we have with partners and the benefits this drives for our city region. This post will provide leadership, working with colleagues, to deliver an excellent, and truly transformative, experience for all students. The successful candidate will provide strategic leadership for an exciting portfolio which is research informed, aligned with professional requirements, internationally facing and inspirational.

You will have a proven track record in excellent academic leadership delivering a climate which enables individuals and teams to thrive and excel. Committed to inclusion and social justice you will work with a wide range of internal and external partners. You will be adept in managing complex academic areas and have an evidenced ability to think strategically whilst also delivering operational improvements. The successful candidate will join a dynamic and ambitious Faculty leadership team.

In return, we offer an excellent benefits package including generous annual leave entitlement, pension scheme, induction and development support as well as family-friendly policies.

We would encourage you to read our informative candidate pack (see link below) for further information about LJMU, the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, and the role. For an informal discussion about the role, you are welcome to contact Faculty Pro-Vice Chancellor, Professor Ndy Ekere ([email protected]) in the first instance.

This is an exciting time to join LJMU as we approach our bicentenary in 2023 and launch our new strategic plan.

If you feel that this is the role you have been looking for and your skills and experience can make a real difference at LJMU, we look forward to hearing from you.

The Astrophysics Research Institute is proud of its commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, having recently been awarded Athena SWAN Gender Equality Bronze status and endeavours to cultivate a staff base that is representative of society. We therefore encourage applications from all individuals who meet the advert criteria, but would particularly encourage women, BAME, LGBTQ+, non-binary and individuals with a disability to apply. We welcome flexible working enquiries.

Please note all of our vacancies will be closed to applications at midnight on the advertised closing date, unless otherwise stated.
