Job Description

For our location in Zeuthen we are seeking:

Postdoctoral researcher in theoretical astroparticle physics

Remuneration Group 13 | Limited: 3 years | Starting date: 01.10.2023 | ID: APPO008/2022 | Deadline: 31.01.2023 | Full-time/Part-time

DESY, with more than 2700 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world's leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.

DESY in Zeuthen is among the leading institutions in astroparticle physics with a focus on gamma-ray and neutrino astronomy, as well as astroparticle theory. The astroparticle theory group currently has interests in multi-messenger astrophysics, including astrophysical accelerators, the transport of cosmic messengers, plasma physics and gravitational waves. DESY offers excellent research opportunities in astroparticle physics through close cooperation with many research groups and major institutions in this field in Germany and abroad. The research group of Martin Pohl engages in extensive plasma simulations to study the interaction of charged particles with plasma turbulence, in particular particle acceleration. Another focus area is the acceleration and transport of energetic particles and their emission products in sources of gamma-ray emission.

About your role:

We anticipate to offer a Postdoctoral position in October 2023 in the group of Martin Pohl. Candidates interested in any of the following areas are encouraged to apply:

  • Multi-messenger modeling of astrophysical sources of energetic particles
  • Particle-in-cell simulations of particle acceleration and turbulence
  • Global modeling of supernova remnants

About you:

  • PhD in theoretical physics, astrophysics, or equivalent qualification
  • Experience and publications in one of the areas outlined above
  • Excellent communication skills and command of English
  • Very good teamwork abilities
  • Prior experience in simulations and their analysis, combined with skills in modern programming, would be advantageous

Good reasons to join:

Look forward to a unique working environment on our international research campus. We attach particular importance to appreciative cooperation and the well-being of our DESY employees. Gender equality is an important aspect for us. To support work life balance we offer flexible working hours, variable part-time and job-sharing. You will benefit from our family-friendly and collegial atmosphere, our established health management and occupational pension provision. As a public funded employer, we offer you a secure workplace and facilitate your individual career with our comprehensive training and development opportunities. Remuneration is according to the regulations of the TV-AVH. DESY offers its employees a financial supplement for a job ticket at both locations.

Appointments are typically made for a period of three years. Screening of applications will commence on Jan 31st, 2023, and continue until the positions are filled. For further information please contact Martin Pohl ([email protected]).
