Job Description

The Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) invites applications for a number of postdoctoral research positions to work in theoretical and computational astrophysics with Prof. Christoph Pfrommer. The successful candidates will work in the areas of the formation and evolution of galaxies and galaxy clusters, transport and feedback by cosmic rays and magnetic fields, or particle-in-cell simulations of shock acceleration and particle transport.

Funding for these positions is provided by the ERC advanced grant PICOGAL that pursues a coordinated multi-scale approach, which combines plasma kinetic and global fluid models with the goal to understand the physics of galaxy formation in a cosmological context. The initial appointment will be made for 2 years (with a possible extension of up to 5 years in total), comes with a competitive salary based on the German public service scale (TV-L) and funds for computational equipment and travel.

The successful applicants will join the Cosmology and High-Energy Astrophysics section at the AIP: https://www.aip.de/en/research/cosmology/ which is located in the beautiful Potsdam/Babelsberg area, at the South-western border of the Berlin metropolitan area. About 130 scientists work on a variety of astrophysical topics covering the full range from solar physics to cosmology. The AIP features excellent HPC supercomputing facilities and has access to national supercomputers. The AIP is an equal opportunity employer, values diversity and particularly encourages applications from women and minorities.

Qualifications

Candidates with experience in theoretical or computational astrophysics and an interest (though not necessarily experience) in any of the aforementioned areas are encouraged to apply. Applicants should have a PhD in astronomy or physics by the beginning of the appointment. The anticipated starting date is July 2022, though an earlier or later date is possible.

Application Instructions

Applications should include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, publication list, and statement of research interests (not exceeding 3 pages) and should be submitted through https://jobs.aip.de/rec112. Applicants should identify three referees that are familiar with their academic work and who will be contacted for letters of recommendation.

Compensation and Benefits

Included Benefits

Employer contributions to medical and dental insurance, relocation expenses, maternity leave, and retirement benefits.
