Job Description

The Dublin Institute of Advanced Studies is offering a number of postgraduate scholarships to work in star formation as well as the development of Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detectors (MKIDs) for astronomy.
The star formation projects are funded from the European Research Council Advanced Grant EASY (Ejection Accretion Structures in YSOs) and involve the use of near-infrared and radio interferometry to study the origin of jets from young stars. In addition, we are also offering a scholarship in Computational Astrophysics for a student to develop 3-D supercomputer simulations investigating non-thermal emission from shocks, with application to jets from young stars, supernova blast waves, and stellar winds from massive stars. Finally, applications are invited for a Science Foundation Ireland funded studentship in our new MKID group with an interest in MKID manufacturing, design and readout.

Requirements: applicants need to have gained a first class or upper second honours degree (or equivalent) or a master's degree in an appropriate subject e.g. astronomy, physics or mathematics. A good command of English, to at least IELTS level 6.5, is also required for international applicants. Students will be expected to start on 1st October 2017.
For enquires regarding observational Star Formation or MKID scholarships, please contact Prof Tom Ray ([email protected]) or, if you are interested in computational astrophysics, Dr Jonathan Mackey ([email protected]).
Applicants should include the following documents with their application: degree certificates and transcript of records, a brief description of their research interests and experience, along with the names and contact details of two referees who can be approached for letters of recommendation. Completed applications should be sent directly to Eileen Flood ([email protected]) and those submitted by 1st July 2017 will receive our full consideration.
