Job Announcement Text:

The Program Manager leads and supports Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory’s (SAO) participation in current and future space flight missions, and the development of ground-based technologies. The Manager takes a lead role in identifying opportunities, conducting studies of NASA missions, submitting proposals for future mission opportunities, developing relevant technologies, and managing missions and projects.

SAO has teamed with NASA’s Ames Research Center and other institutions to propose Arcus, a MIDEX-class satellite that would provide the highest and most sensitive X-ray grating spectra available. The Manager will play a key role in this proposal, which is expected to be a leading contender in the upcoming MIDEX round. The Manager will lead the project’s coordination with NASA, industrial contractors, and university partners. The incumbent will establish and manage schedules, budgets and subcontracts for technology development within SAO to support such a mission. Beyond Arcus, the Manager will be involved in a range of other proposals and projects around the Observatory.

SAO is part of the Smithsonian Institution. SAO is widely recognized as the largest and most diverse astrophysical institution in the world, with a staff that carries out a broad program of research in astronomy, astrophysics, and planetary, earth, and space sciences. The High Energy division, which leads the Arcus proposal, focuses primarily on X-ray astronomy. To join this exciting organization, apply today!
