Job Announcement Text:

The Infrared Group of the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Garching (near Munich), Germany is one of the world's leading institutes for the development of pioneering ground- and space-based astronomical instruments. These include PACS, a far-infrared imager and integral field spectrometer for ESA's Herschel mission; GRAVITY, a VLTI instrument for precision astrometry and interferometric imaging of faint objects for the VLT in Chile; and ARGOS, a laser guide star ground layer AO system for the LBT in Arizona. These instruments support our astrophysical research programme that focusses on galaxy evolution in the early universe, local active galaxies, and the Galactic Center (http://www.mpe.mpg.de/ir/).

We seek highly motivated candidates to work with us in the framework of two new instruments MICADO and ERIS.

ERIS is a diffraction limited instrument for the Very Large Telescope in Chile. It will make use of the Adaptive Optics Facility on UT4 to provide high contrast imaging and integral field spectroscopy at near infrared wavelengths. The instrument is currently in its final design phase. The position for ERIS includes assembly, integration, and testing of the instrument.

MICADO is a diffraction limited first light camera for the European Extremely Large Telescope. The focus of the instrument is on imaging and precision astrometry, with additional modes providing coronagraphic imaging, time resolved imaging, and spectroscopy. The project is in its preliminary design phase. The position for MICADO includes analysis and evaluation of the instrument performance to close the loop between astrophysical requirements and engineering realisation, and planning of the assembly and testing phases of the instrument.

The offers are made for either engineering or postdoctoral positions, depending on the applicant's background. In the context of a postdoctoral position, some fraction of the time would be devoted to astrophysical research within the main themes of the group noted above.

Applicants should have a PhD in physics or related field before starting. The position is for a nominal period of 2 years, starting immediately or at a mutually agreed time. Salaries are paid at German civil service rates (TVöD) depending on experience.

Please send a letter of application, a brief description of research interests, a curriculum vitae including bibliography, and three letters of reference by August 31, 2016 to [email protected]. The Max Planck Society is an equal opportunities employer and encourages applications from women, minorities, and disabled persons.

Please contact Dr Richard Davies ([email protected]) for further information.
