Job Announcement Text:

The Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc. (AURA) operates several observatory centers (including the Gemini Observatory, the National Optical Astronomy Observatory, the National
Solar Observatory, and the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope) in the United States and Chile under a cooperative agreement with the National Science Foundation.

Gemini Observatory has an opening for one and possibly two Tenure-Track Astronomer positions at Gemini North in Hilo, Hawaii. Dual-career couples are encouraged to apply. The appointment can be at
the Assistant, Associate or full Astronomer rank. The initial appointment is a three-year renewable term, with application for tenure expected during the second three-year term, or earlier for more
senior candidates. The position is based in Hilo, Hawaii. Hilo is a town with a very diverse population of about 43,000 people, a tropical  climate, and a substantial international astronomical community
supporting the observatories on Maunakea.

This position  requires strong scientific leadership abilities and a solid commitment to Gemini’s mission to advance knowledge of the Universe by providing the Gemini community with forefront access to
the entire sky. Tenure-track astronomers provide the Observatory's overall scientific leadership, including guiding its development for the future. A tenure-track astronomer is expected to maintain a strong
scientific program with excellent productivity, and act as a mentor to Gemini science staff. Fifty percent (50%) of a tenure-track astronomer’s time is available for astronomical research. The position
includes access to the generous research budget shared by all research staff, and an excellent compensation package including health coverage, paid time off and retirement benefits.

Gemini staff astronomers utilize diverse, state-of-the-art astronomical research tools and instrumentation.  The exact support duties of the staff Astronomer will vary depending on the individual’s
skills and interests, and the Observatory’s needs.  All staff are expected to become proficient in night-time observing using any of the Observatory’s current instrumentation and to support investigators in
the community.  Additional support projects may include new instrument commissioning or other Observatory development projects aimed at improving efficiency, data quality or user support.

Requirements: Ph.D. in astronomy, physics or related discipline, and related work experience.  Substantial ground-based observing and/or instrumentation experience is highly desirable, particularly using
modern facilities. Experience/knowledge in the following areas is a plus:  infrared spectroscopy and optical or infrared integral field spectroscopy. Scientific productivity and impact will be considered,
as judged by the candidate’s top contributions to astronomy, which may include research publications, contributions to software or technical projects, contributions to education, etc. The applicant must be
safety conscious, possess or be able to obtain a valid passport, and be willing and able to travel internationally.

Please apply online at http://www.gemini.edu/jobs. The online submission must include a cover letter relating your experience and interest in the position, Curriculum Vitae, publication record,
statement of current and future research (preferably using Gemini), and statement of observatory support interests. Applicants must arrange for three professional reference letters to be emailed to
[email protected] and [email protected] by the deadline below.

Applications received by December 5, 2016 will receive full consideration. The position will remain open until filled.

AURA/Gemini is an affirmative action & equal opportunity employer. AURA actively supports efforts to broaden participation in all Observatory activities. Women and candidates from under-represented
minorities are particularly encouraged to apply.
