Job Announcement Text:

Franklin & Marshall College invites applications for a tenure-track position in the Department of Physics and Astronomy beginning Fall 2017.  We are interested in candidates whose research area is in experimental/computational physics or computational/observational astrophysics. The rank will be Assistant Professor or Instructor depending on qualifications.  Applicants should possess or be close to completing a doctorate degree.  We are interested in candidates who can teach physics at all levels.  Ability to teach astronomy is an asset.  In addition, the candidate would offer courses that build on the Department’s offerings along with contributions in the College’s general education program, Connections

Interested candidates should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, graduate transcript, teaching statement, research statement, teaching evaluation forms if available, and three letters of recommendation to Dr Andrea Lommen, Chair, at Interfolio http://apply.interfolio.com/36994.

For full consideration applications should be received by Nov 1, 2016. Please ensure that your reference letters address your abilities and promise as a teacher, not just as a researcher.

Pursuant to cultivating an inclusive college community, we appreciate hearing about your work with people with diverse perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds.  We also value experience overcoming or helping others overcome barriers to success. Please include these narratives where appropriate in your application materials.

A successful teaching statement will discuss how you have addressed or would address the challenge of including students with diverse backgrounds and goals, the use of varied pedagogies, and your successes and failures as a teacher.  Address how your understanding and practice of teaching and learning has developed and will continue to develop, including concrete examples. Writing across the curriculum is an important aspect of F&M's goals, so please consider writing about how you have used or would use writing in your teaching.

A successful research statement will discuss how you will include undergraduates in your research in a meaningful way and how you will contribute significantly to your field from an environment that is very different from a Research 1 university.  The Physics and Astronomy department hosts eight full-time faculty, has no graduate students, and serves as home to our engineering students as well.  One interesting option at a liberal arts college like ours is to consider cross-disciplinary collaborations.

Franklin & Marshall College is committed to having an inclusive campus community where all members are treated with dignity and respect. As an Equal Opportunity Employer, the College does not discriminate in its hiring or employment practices on the basis of gender, sex, race, ethnicity, color, national origin, religion, age, disability, family or marital status, sexual orientation, or any protected characteristic.
