Job Announcement Text:

The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) and Johns Hopkins University (JHU) invite applications for at least two post-doctoral researcher positions in astronomy to work with Dr. Marc Rafelski and collaborators. The research projects encompass observational extragalactic science based on imaging and spectroscopy from a wide range of observatories, including the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA), Very Large Telescope (VLT), Keck Observatory, NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA), and Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA). At least one of the post-docs at STScI will work with data from the UVCANDELS survey (UV imaging of the CANDELS fields), MUDF (NIR grism observations of the MUSE Ultra Deep Field), and PASSAGE (a JWST pure parallel grism program). One post-doc at JHU will be a mentor of post-bachelor researchers as part of a mentoring program with the Maria Mitchell Observatory, while working on studies of the circumgalactic and intergalactic medium.

The postdoc will work with many collaborators, including Drs. Mitchell Revalski, Alaina Henry, Harry Ferguson, and Swara Ravindranath at STScI, Regina Jorgenson at Maria Mitchell Observatory, Xavier Prochaska at UC Santa Cruz, Harry Teplitz at IPAC, and Michele Fumagalli at the University of Milano Bicocca. Part of the time may be available for independent research or new projects in related areas. The nominal start date is expected to be in Summer/Fall 2022, but other dates are negotiable. The initial appointment for the STScI positions is for at least one year, with the expected renewal to a 2nd and 3rd year subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding. The JHU appointment is for 3 years subject to satisfactory performance.

Both STScI, located on Johns Hopkins University Campus in Baltimore, Maryland, and JHU offer excellent benefit packages, competitive salaries, and a stimulating work environment. STScI’s pay is commensurate to the year of Ph.D, while JHU’s pay is a fixed initial amount.

Any questions about the position should be directed to [email protected]

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree in Astronomy, Physics, Planetary Science, or related fields at the start of the position. Expertise in one or more of the following areas is desirable: (a) UV/optical/NIR imaging and spectroscopy; (b) data reduction and analysis of observations; (c) evolution of galaxies (d) intergalactic and circumgalactic medium studies (IGM & CGM); (e) experience with grism or IFU spectroscopy. More important is the willingness to take on new projects, learn new skills, and work independently to bring these projects to fruition.

Applicants are required to complete an online application by December 10, 2021 through the direct link below.
