The Institute for Astronomy (IfA) at the University of Hawaii invites applications for a postdoctoral research position located in Honolulu, Hawaii.  The successful applicant will collaborate with Dr. Michael Liu and his research group on topics related to low-mass stars, brown dwarfs, and exoplanets, based on observing programs carried out with premier ground-based and space-based telescopes, spanning angular scales from the diffraction limit to the entire sky.  Applicants with interest and expertise in any of these areas are encouraged to apply.

The successful applicant will have access to optical and IR telescopes on the summit of Mauna Kea through the IfA's guaranteed share of observing time.  The IfA is also the lead institution in the Pan-STARRS-1 wide-field optical telescope, now in routine science operations, and a participant in the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS).  IfA astronomers have full access to Pan-STARRS-1 and UKIDSS data.  The IfA is also the co-lead for the Pan-STARRS-1 key project studying low-mass stars and brown dwarfs in the extended solar neighborhood.

The position is available immediately, but the start date is flexible and can be anytime in 2013.  The annual salary will be approximately $64,500 per year and will include support for research activities.  By the starting date, candidates should have obtained a PhD degree in astronomy, physics or equivalent area relevant to the science themes described above.  This appointment is a non-regular, full-time position, with a limited term up to 3 years.  Annual continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
